Coffee is pretty much a morning ritual in most parts of the world, where people have to have a steaming hot cup of coffee before they can begin their day. One of the places in the world where coffee plays an important part of everyday like is Italy! Italians have coffee drinking down to an art and here are a couple of things for you to keep in mind when ordering a cup of delicious coffee in Italy.
Latte: While latte is a coffee variety in most places in Italy, you order a latte and all you’re going to get is a cup of milk!
Espresso: An espresso is not really a type of coffee in Italy; it is usually a default setting! Ordering un caffe pretty much is asking for an espresso.Un caffe is usually served in small cups like a shot. Don’t be fooled by the small quantity. This is some potent stuff.
Coffee+Milk is acceptable only in the morning! That’s right, order a cup of coffee with milk in it, like a cappuccino or caffe latte after lunch and you are likely to be rewarded with a cringe. Italians are repulsed with the thought of hot milk hitting their stomachs after the afternoon meal! If you end up ordering one of these after your meal but just be ready for some incredulous looks!
Coffee is meant to be ordered and consumed at the bar. That’s simply the Italian way! Coffee is usually consumed quickly rather that sipped and mulled over in Italy. You may take a seat but you’ll find yourself paying a lot more than is you were to have coffee standing.
The Starbucks menu or whatever it is you’re used to in your hometown will simply not do in Italy. Ordering something like a peppermint coffee in Italy would be sacrilegious!
There you have it, you now will be able to enjoy Italian coffee just like the locals do!
